Collinsport

A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture

Collinsport is the central setting of Dark Shadows, a fictional Maine town whose identity is inseparable from the wealthy Collins family. It functions not merely as a backdrop but as the social and historical ground on which the series’ family drama, supernatural disturbances, and conflicts over inheritance and belonging unfold.

Setting and Series Context

Collinsport is presented as the Maine home of the Collins family in Dark Shadows, which began as a gothic soap opera on the American Broadcasting Company television network in June 1966 and ran until April 1971. The series follows the Collins family through complicated lives that are frequently supernatural, making the town the enduring location where domestic relationships and gothic impossibilities occupy the same narrative world.

The setting’s importance increases when Barnabas Collins enters the story several months into the first series. His arrival transforms the family drama by bringing an explicitly vampiric history into the life of Collinsport. The town consequently becomes the place where inherited wealth, buried violence, romantic obsession, and the return of the undead are made visible within one continuing family narrative.

Barnabas Collins’s Return

In the 2012 film adaptation directed by Tim Burton, Collinsport is the destination to which Barnabas Collins returns after centuries of confinement and plotting. Condemned to everlasting torment in the 1700s by Angelique, a witch and his spurned former lover, Barnabas was turned into a vampire after Angelique killed his fiancée and had him buried alive. After spending centuries preparing his revenge, he comes back to Collinsport seeking vengeance.

His return makes the town a site of historical recurrence: the eighteenth-century conflict that produced Barnabas’s vampirism re-enters the world of the Collins family generations later. Collinsport therefore holds both the visible present of the family and the consequences of its hidden past. Barnabas’s reappearance converts the town into a threshold between ordinary family continuity and the unresolved supernatural history that has been waiting beneath it.

Family Conflict and Supernatural Power

The Collins family’s position in Collinsport is marked by wealth, but that privilege does not protect the town from emotional or supernatural violence. Barnabas is characterized as an ultimate family man who will accept collateral damage so long as his nearest and dearest remain safe. His objective in returning is consequently divided between revenge against Angelique and the protection of his newly rediscovered family.

Angelique’s presence gives Collinsport a rival claim to power. She was genuinely in love with Barnabas when young but was discarded because she was a servant; her subsequent revenge binds the town’s family history to class resentment, erotic desire, and witchcraft. In the present, she seeks to preserve the relationship she believes was destined for her, even while destroying others. The conflict between Barnabas and Angelique thus turns Collinsport into the arena for competing versions of justice: familial security on one side, wounded desire and vengeance on the other.

Romance, Reincarnation, and Narrative Significance

Collinsport also contains the story’s romantic repetitions. Victoria Winters, Barnabas’s apparent true love, is revealed to be the reincarnation of his first love, Josette. This revelation makes the town a place where lost relationships return in altered forms, linking the Collins family’s current life to the emotional catastrophe of its earlier history.

The setting’s gothic force comes from this overlap of domestic and supernatural scales. Barnabas and Angelique are undead creatures of the night, yet the desires driving them remain recognizably human: protection, love, resentment, revenge, and the wish to possess a relationship that has been lost. Collinsport gives those desires a durable geographical home, allowing the family’s private conflicts to survive across centuries and making the town the organizing space of Dark Shadows’s gothic soap-opera structure.
